The world’s biggest Internet search company Google’s Managing Director, Media & Platforms – APAC Mr. Shailesh Rao has called it quits at the organization.
Rao will join Twitter, the micro blogging service with more than 100 million users, later this year to work on the advertising side of the business, Matt Graves, a spokesman for the San Francisco-based company, said today by telephone.
Twitter is trying to bolster its revenue after announcing an advertising platform for the U.S. in 2010 and a global ad push in 2011. Ad revenue at the closely held company is set to rise to $540 million in 2014 from $139.5 million in 2011, according to estimates by New York-based EMarketer.
When contacted a Google India spokeswoman confirmed that Friday was Rao’s last day. “We thank Shailesh for his fantastic contributions to Google and Google India, in particular, and wish him the best in his future endeavours,” the spokeswoman added.
Last month, Twitter said it had added a new feature to censor tweets, or 140-character posts, on a country-by-country basis, drawing criticism from some of its 100 million-odd global users.
Rao has been with Google since March 2005 growing in ranks to oversee Google business in Asia Pacific.
Before leading Google display-ad sales in Asia, Rao had served as managing director for the company’s business in India and once worked as a director in charge of local search and new content partnerships worldwide.
Rao, 41, had moved to India in 2007 to head Google India. Prior to that he was with Google’s California headquarter, serving as director, local search. He was instrumental in launching of Google Maps and Earth across Western Europe and parts of Asia and Latin America.
Rao has also worked with Yodlee and AOL amongst others and holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, a BS from the Wharton School, and an MBA from The Kellogg School of Management.
